A real gem of a camera ... but don't expect image quality miracles
In the last 6 years I've used a couple of compacts which I've since got rid of after upgrading to DSLRs (Canon XT and then 40D). For a while I was waiting for a compact that I could carry with me anywhere I want, and particularly to parties and other social occasions where bringing a DSLR is really not an option.When this camera was announced it really looked like a dream compact for me. Fast, wide and optically stabilized lens is ideal for low-light indoor shots. The design is stylish and beautiful, the camera is quite compact and it has all the controls an advanced amateur would need.Further the sensor is essentially as big as they get in compact cameras and with almost reasonable 10mp (still about 5mp too many but not as bad as 12-15mp you would get in any other compact with a comparable sensor).I've had the camera for a couple of weeks now (and shame on Amazon for not having it in stock a month after it appeared in some other big stores). IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!
First let me establish some credentials. I have been making photographs for 57 years, for personal satisfaction and for work. For 24 of those years, I also ran a part-time wedding photography business. I have been using digital cameras since 2001 and have owned many Nikon digital SLRs (D100, D200, D300) and a number of compact digital cameras.With that out of the way, let me simply say, "the Panasonic LX3 is the BEST compact digital camera I have ever owned and, in my opinion, there is nothing else currently in its class that even comes close." I feel so strongly about the merits of the LX3, I am purchasing another one to put up for future use. It's THAT good!Yes, its a bit pricey ..... no, it will not replace a DSLR for some things ..... no, it is not for everyone. Panasonic LX3It's not a world-shaking camera, but it's a good one. I give it 4 stars.I've been taking pictures for pleasure since the 70s. I've owned a Nikon rangefinder, a Yashicamat 124G, a Pentax 67, and a variety of Nikon SLRs since back in the ancient days of film. Most of my cameras have been fully manual: set the focus by hand, set the zoom by hand (if there is a zoom), set the aperture and shutter speed by hand. All those cameras have separate lens caps, too.I've also owned several all-automatic point & shoots, and I now own a Nikon D-70, which is my main camera these days. Nice upgrade from the LX3
This camera is really fantastic and a nice upgrade from the LX3. That's not to say that everyone should upgrade, but I think there are some significant advantages.For me, I really needed the additional zoom and was very excited to hear that this is exactly what the LX5 had, without sacrificing the f2.0 lens. My brother needed a new camera anyway and was happy to get my 2 year old LX3. (By the way that camera is in nearly perfect condition. Panasonic really build a quality product with the LX line and I think the LX5 is even better.)Here are the major comparisons to the LX3. Decide if these are worth it to you:- Better image stabilization. I am getting crisp photos at speeds as low as 1/10sec.- Better sensor than the LX3. The ultimate serious photographer's point & shoot
Wow, I am so impressed by this camera! I am a professional photographer and have been searching for a quality point & shoot for casual use when I don't want to lug around my DSLR (Nikon D700 at the moment) but have never been happy with the compromises of a P&S. Some of the features that were most important to me for a P&S were:- RAW files - LX5 can shoot RAW files to allow changing WB and giving maximum flexibility in editing images in my preferred RAW converter, Lightroom 3.- Fast glass - f/2 lens!! Even at 90mm, it is still f/3.3!- Wide-angle - 24mm (35mm equivalent) is awesome, the Canon S90 only goes to 28mm and most P&S no wider than 35mm.- Decent zoom range - I wasn't interested in a 10x superzoom but wanted something at least to 70 or 80 mm. The zoom range of 24mm to 90mm is just perfect without compromising the quality and speed of the lens.- Reasonable compactness - it is fairly compact without feeling like I'm handling a bar of soap...

Depends What You're Looking For
I said "Depends on What You're Looking For" because everyone has their own expectations and needs. In my case, all my DSLRs have been Nikon, and all my small pocket cameras have been Canon. I was in the market for a new pocket camera since my others didn't have optical image stabilization. So I bought another small Canon, and for some reason, just not as pleased anymore (I ended up giving to my wife and she loves it). I must admit I'm picky on quality of the image, high ISO capability, and having some control over camera setting.A friend of mine had been looking at DSLRs, but bought the LX5 and asked what I thought about it. The more I reviewed and analyzed it, the more I liked it. So I bought one. It's close to a pocket size camera, but a little larger. Though the specs say 4.3 inch x 2.6 inch x 1 inch, that is true, but just for the body itself. The lens with lens cap adds another inch sticking out. So the body is OK, but a little bigger than I previously would...

Pump Assy
Had a 2 1/2 horse power pump from Rec. Warehouse would only put out 10-12 psi and was very noise. Installed this Hayward SP1580X15 Power-Flo LX Series Pump 1-1/2 Horse Power. Putting out 15psi and very little noise from pump. Only draw back is it only has one speed HIGH. Getting ready to open pool up next week. Time will tell how well it works. I believe for the money you can not beat it, Rec. Warehouse wanted over $300. The pressure coming out of the return hose is great. Hope this helps you!

The advanced design reduces required maintenance to simple, common-sense procedures. For above-ground pools requiring self-priming action this pump features a heavy-duty motor. Made of the high-strength PermaGlass XL material this pump has a clear cover to let you see when basket needs cleaning. An extra-large debris basket (118-cubic-inches) keeps pool maintenance to a minimum by extending time between cleanings. Rigid construction with load extender ribbing ensures free-flowing operation for heavy debris loads.

The pump also offers 100-percent drip proof, heat-resistant double-sized seal for long motor life. It features a self-priming 1-1/2 inch intake and discharge, and a 6-foot power cord (120-volt). Hayward PowerFlo LX has self-lubricating motor bearings and shaft seals. No lubrication is necessary. The 60-cycle single-phase motor is rated for 1-horsepower (115-volts) and 20-amp circuit breakers. The pump motor is equipped with automatic thermal overload protection. The thermal overload will shut the motor off under abnormal conditions before damage to motor occurs. The motor will auto-restart when safer heat level is reached. For storage and winterizing your pump is important. Pump and motor must be protected from freezing. Shut off all electric power. Disconnect cord/electrical connections and plumbing connections. Drain thoroughly and clean out any debris. Store pump and motor in a dry, well-ventilated room.

No on-off switch
This pump has plenty of power attached to a sand filter for my 13,000 gallon above ground pool.Only problem is it has no on-off switch and you have to plug and unplug it to turn it on and off. The top comes off easily for cleaning the filter basket. Was simple to install to my filtering system. Durability - I run it nearly every other day for 3-4 hours and no problems so far- 4 months. July 23,2011 - It is now 1 year later and my pump is still running strong. I would definitely recommend this pump.

If you have a Lumix LX3, you need this book.
I'm so happy I found this book and ordered it at the same time I ordered my LX3. I know a bit about photography (went to film school, but it's been a while), and the book is a great refresher. But its real value is how clearly and precisely it guides you though each feature of the LX3. And let me say: there are A LOT of features. The author uses plain English to explain complex, multi-step settings and adjustments and it's incredibly easy to follow. I keep the book in one hand, the camera in the other and follow it step-by-step. It would be no stretch to compare the effectiveness of this book to the books of David Pogue, the New York Times technology editor who's got legions of fans, including me. White is a really terrific teacher and I would generally describe myself as a terrible student with a very short attention span. Where was this guy when I needed to understand algebra?

About that new Lumix LX5 model...
After a brief and frustrating look at the manual to my newly purchased Lumix LX5, I was thrilled to see that Mr. White "wrote the book" on the LX3, published this year. I know that most of the functions of the Lumix LX3 and the LX5 are the same. I'm tempted to rush to my Amazon account to buy the book. Does the author feel the LX3 book is sufficient for the LX5? Do you plan a new book for the newer model. Conversely, it might make more sense to write a small addendum manual for the LX5 that would be marketed and sold with your current book.I would appreciate hearing from you about any major problems I might have with the Lumix LX3 book's application to the Lumix LX5 and any plans you might have to address the newer model.PS Now where exactly is the attachment place on the camera for that little lens cap strap?

Excellent!
Sick and tired of being tied to a contract with AT&T, I want to go for prepaid. I did some researches on several phones including the Sidekick LX. Finally, I decided to abandon my iPhone and go for the Sidekick. Since T-Mobile stop offering data plan for Sidekick, I can use this smartphone without spending extra bucks (for the data plan that I rarely use). I bought this phone to replace my broken Blackberry so I didn't have to pay alot of money. The phone is awesome. I can do all of my internet surfing still and Facebook updates.
